Parents Show Overwhelming Support for Council-Run Programs
Parents of Metcalfe P.S were surveyed in October to determine parent’s overall
support for School Council programs as well as priority for Council funds.
The survey aimed to provide important feedback to the newly elected Council for
the purpose of setting goals for the coming year.
"It was gratifying to see the overwhelming support for the traditional programs run by
Council," says Ellen Everson, Co-chair.
The hot lunch program received the highest support with 86% of
respondents rating the program as either strong or very strong.
The Jingle Bells Bazaar was a close second with a corresponding 76% approval rating.
In the case of the Bazaar, however, support jumped to nearly 97% among junior grades and 82%
among primary grades. This is not surprising but reminds Council that different programs serve
and support different segments of our school population.
The school supplies program received the lowest support with an overall rating of 43%
among the strong or very strong responses. "We need to be careful with this result," cautions Jo
Anne Sheldrick, Co-chair. "Since the school supplies program is in its first year of operation,
we think it is still too soon to tell what the take up of the program will be. It will take a
little time for students and parents to become fully aware of the great prices and convenience that
is being offered."

Survey results were based on 154 completed questionnaires, or a 42% response rate.
Distribution of responses across the primary, junior, and intermediate grades were somewhat
biased to the primary grades.
Survey results on preferred areas of financial support were less conclusive with support
broadly distributed across the arts, sports, library, and grounds. Many respondents provided
additional comments on suggested areas of support and these will factor into further investigation
in the future.
