THE LITTLE SCHOOL THAT COULD
Innovation at Metcalfe Public School

By Peter Thorp-Levitt (Public Relations).

Metcalfe Public School is relatively old and in need of renovation and while other area school populations are increasing in size Metcalfe Public's is decreasing. However, what it lacks in visual appeal is more than compensated for by more important albeit less tangible things.

For example, with a junior kindergarten to grade eight student population of 352 the average class size is 22 and far below the provincial average. This allows students much more individualized learning time with their teachers, unlike is possible in larger classes as experienced in other area schools.

Additionally, while some schools emphasize religion and others provide second language learning in an immersion venue, Metcalfe Public School's highly professional and caring teaching staff delivers a solid academic program. This includes a holistic approach to language arts and a solid core French, mathematics, science, modern computer and social sciences program, plus essential emotional support that is uncommon in the educational system today. Proof of our success is the fact that Queen's and Nipissing universities and the University of Ottawa and the State University of New York send their student teachers to us for practical experience.

Specifically, the breakfast, milk and hot lunch programs provide nutrition and a fun way to socialize. Further, the many educational field trips, sports activities, newly re-developed schoolyard and cultural events such as the much-publicized Metcalfe Idol singing competition and last week's Jingle Bell Bazaar fund raiser(photos available for publication can be found at the following web site: http://ljgdesign.comhttp://mpscouncil.com/news/jb.html ) are indicative of a healthy learning environment that helps to foster extraordinary school morale. This impressive team spirit is reflected in part by the exciting new Mustang school emblem as conceptualized last year by a Metcalfe Public School grade 7 student.

Metcalfe Public School is not just a bricks and mortar institution; it is a community of motivated learners, dedicated teachers, supportive parents and an active parent council, all of whom work together to make the learning experience one that is not easily replicated anywhere in the region. Together we have seized the initiative in revitalizing both the physical and virtual assets of the school.
